What Is a Dental Emergency?

Unfortunately, dental emergencies can happen even when you take good care of your smile! When faced with a dental problem, it can be tricky to determine if the situation is a dental emergency. With this blog post, we hope to help you feel more informed!

What Is considered a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is an oral condition that requires immediate treatment to reduce pain, improve function, stop bleeding, and/or prevent infection. Usually the problem greatly interferes with your daily life and can make concentrating, sleeping, eating, and/or speaking difficult. For example, the following dental issues are considered dental emergencies that require urgent dental care:

  • Knocked-out permanent tooth
  • Broken or cracked tooth
  • Extreme tooth pain
  • Dental abscess
  • Broken dentures
  • Profuse oral swelling and bleeding
  • Broken or damaged braces

What is not a dental emergency?

Not every dental problem is an emergency. You can wait several days or even a few weeks to receive treatment for some problems. Issues like mildly bleeding gums, a chipped tooth, or a minor toothache can often wait.
