Choosing the Right Toothbrush and Toothpaste

Consistent brushing and flossing are vital to good oral health. If you neglect your daily oral hygiene routine, you increase your risk for cavities, gum disease, and other problems! But, how do you choose the right toothbrush and toothpaste?

What Toothbrush Should I Use?

The right toothbrush should fit easily in your mouth and remove plaque, which is a sticky film of bacteria always forming on your teeth. You may think a hard-bristled toothbrush will do a better job, but dentists actually recommend a brush with soft bristles! Soft-bristled brushes remove plaque just as well as hard bristles, and they’re not as hard on your teeth and gums. They also bend better, which helps them clean hard-to-reach areas.

Should I Get an Electric Toothbrush?

You can achieve optimal oral hygiene with a manual toothbrush, but many people prefer electric toothbrushes. They’re great if you have less hand strength and coordination, and they’re gentler on the gums. Studies have also shown better cleaning results with an electric brush. This may be due to the fact that we frequently overestimate the duration of our toothbrushing sessions, and an electric toothbrush can effectively achieve more within the same amount of time. Some great starting options are Sonicare or Oral-B.

What Kind of Toothpaste Is the Best?

Many toothpastes on the market today will do a fine job cleaning your teeth. To protect your teeth from cavities, we recommend ADA-approved toothpaste with fluoride. Fluoride, a naturally occurring mineral added to toothpaste, tap water, and mouthwash, can remineralize enamel before cavities start forming. For best results, don’t rinse your mouth right after brushing. If you have sensitive teeth, desensitizing toothpaste can reduce discomfort.
