When Is the Right Age for Kids’ Braces?
May 14, 2022 3:04 amGetting braces is an exciting dental milestone, as well as a big commitment. So when is the right age for children to get braces?
Age for First Orthodontic Visit
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children get their first orthodontic consultation around seven years old. Children around this age typically have a mix of baby and permanent teeth, including their first permanent molars. During this visit, existing and developing alignment issues can be identified by our orthodontist, Dr. Ballou.
Based on your child’s misalignment, Dr. Ballou can determine when and which orthodontic treatment is right for your child. Your child may benefit from early interceptive orthodontic treatment, or we may recommend they wait several years before getting braces.
Braces for Kids
Children’s braces are like braces for adults. They consist of brackets adhered to the teeth that hold a metal wire. Pressure from this wire moves the teeth. There are other orthodontic treatments for children too, such as space maintainers, palatal expanders, and more.
Braces can correct various dental problems, from mildly crooked teeth to large gaps to a severely misaligned bite. Your child’s treatment will be personalized based on the original positions of their teeth and how their smile responds to treatment.
Treatment Time & Care
Interceptive treatment can be between 6-12 months. Later orthodontic treatment is usually between 12-24 months. During treatment, encourage your child to take great care of their smile. Kids with braces should: brush and floss in the morning, at night, and after every meal; avoid certain foods that may damage their braces like popcorn, hard candy, gum, and bitting into apples and corn on the cob; and keep up with their schedule orthodontic checkups.
