Tips for Maintaining Oral Hygiene with BracesDecember 12, 2023 9:00 am
If you have braces, you are probably well aware of how tricky it can be to keep them clean. But maintaining good oral hygiene while wearing braces is essential to achieving the beautiful smile you hope to see once the braces finally come off. Here are a few tips to help you keep your teeth healthy throughout your orthodontic journey.
Brush Often and Thoroughly
When you have braces, it is advised to brush after each meal to make sure that food particles don’t get stuck in the metal brackets and wires. Take your time when brushing to reach every nook and cranny around your braces. Otherwise, when your braces come off, you may have a straight smile with lots of areas of demineralization, or white spots.
Don’t Forget to Floss
Flossing is always a key component of your oral hygiene routine, but it becomes even more important when you have braces. Use a floss threader or interdental brush to get underneath the wires and around the brackets more easily.
Use Wax to Prevent Irritation
Sometimes metal braces can begin to rub against the soft tissue of your lips and cheeks, causing discomfort. Even small sores or cuts can be painful or become irritated. To prevent irritation, keep orthodontic wax on hand so you can place a small amount over the brackets that are giving you trouble.
If it’s not feasible for you to brush and floss after every meal, you can rinse your mouth with water to dislodge any lingering food debris. Drinking plenty of water will help keep your braces clean and promote saliva production, which neutralizes tooth-damaging acids.
