At-Home Remedies for Braces Pain
July 13, 2022 12:17 pmWhile getting and wearing braces shouldn’t cause you intense pain, it is normal to experience some discomfort now and then. After all, your teeth are experiencing daily pressure and being shifted from where they want to be. This discomfort should lessen over time, but until then, there are some at-home remedies that you can try to alleviate your pain.
Use an Ice Pack
An ice pack can help reduce swelling associated with a wide variety of injuries or irritation. It is useful for braces pain since it can reduce inflammation and numb the area a bit to give you some relief. Wrap the ice pack in a towel and apply it to the outside of your mouth where it hurts in increments of 15-20 minutes. A bag of frozen veggies can work in a pinch.
Try Cold Foods
Eating cool foods can help remove some of that discomfort you might be feeling from your braces. We recommend chilled watermelon, popsicles, smoothies, frozen yogurt, and ice cream. But do not chew on ice! This is harmful for your teeth and braces.
Take Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen
Never use another person’s prescription medicine! You can take over-the-counter pain medication to alleviate braces pain, but make sure you’re following the specified dosage and directions on the medicine’s package. For example, ibuprofen must be taken with food. While taking OTC pain relievers daily is not a safe idea due to potential adverse effects from overuse, it is OK to use every now and then.
